Teaching Kids About Saving Money

Saving money is one of the most important financial skills you can teach your child. Starting early helps build habits that will last a lifetime.

The Three Jars Method

A popular approach is the three jars method: Save, Spend, and Share. When your child receives pocket money, they divide it between these three jars. This teaches them to balance immediate wants with long-term goals and generosity.

Set Savings Goals

Help your child set a specific savings goal - perhaps a toy or game they want. Calculate together how many weeks of saving it will take. This teaches patience and delayed gratification.

Match Their Savings

Consider matching a portion of what they save. If they put 50p aside, you add 25p. This mirrors employer pension matching and shows them that saving has rewards.

Open a Junior ISA

For older children, consider opening a Junior ISA. This introduces them to formal banking and shows their money can grow over time.
